Finding Hope Between the Bookshelves
Finding Hope Between the Bookshelves
By Miradi Tanzambi
The mother in my first story eventually discovered a silent miracle in a location that many of us take for granted: her neighborhood library, after spending months sleeping in her car with two kids. It was more than a structure. Warmth, security, Wi-Fi, storytime for her kids, and a group of individuals who knew her name—possibly for the first time in years—were all present.
Research shows this isn’t just emotional — it works. In The Guardian’s coverage of guaranteed income programs, one participant explained, “It’s not just about the money. It’s about dignity, freedom, and having choices.” Libraries give that same freedom: a place where she isn’t turned away, rushed out, or seen as a burden.
Why you should care:
Community hubs foster trust, lessen isolation, and provide families with the assistance they need to end homelessness cycles. By bolstering institutions such as libraries, churches, and community centers, Portland is rebuilding lives rather than merely providing services.
A guaranteed micro-income provides stability
A library provides hope.
Together, they can change a family's future.
