The unknown struggle of the homeless, and a tool to prepare against it.

    Many people know of the struggles that occur to a person when they experience homelessness. With over 22,000 homeless individuals in Oregon, homelessness becomes more and more of an issue. There are so many troubles and hardships that come with being homeless, some issues are widely known, while others are problems that many people do not consider to be apart of the problem. Oregon is very fortunate to have programs that are better programs than other states when it comes to these problems, but that does not make it easy. One of the major issues that people experiencing homelessness is the issue of replacing ID’s. Replacing an ID for everyone is difficult, but for people who do not have an address it increases the difficulty exponentially. While living on the street it can be very difficult to lose things such as a birth certificate, Social security card, or Drivers license. Replacing these require documents and information not available to those experiencing homelessness. 


    Luckily Oregon is very fortunate to have backup plans that other states, such as Nevada, do not have in order to help get people back on their feet, and it's important to know this information because homelessness can happen to anybody, and it's much better to be over prepared than underprepared. As without something such as a birth certificate you will not be able to have to have in order to work, rent, or apply for public assistance. 



    Throughout Oregon there are multiple organizations that are going to be crucial for someone to know. Found HERE you can find an interactive map that points to find help for your situation. These organizations are very large in helping getting your Oregon birth certificate, and additionally they can also help cross out another massive barrier for those experiencing homelessness. In Oregon you are able to get a new Birth certificate for free if you are homeless. 


    Knowledge is a large part of the battle. People who do not know of the resources cannot use them. It is much better to be over prepared than underprepared for there are many resources and tools available to people that don't know they can use them. So save your resources in case you need them, most people will not need them, but the people who will need them, should use them.

The similarity between all scenarios in which a person is experiencing homelessness is that each person is human. A popular belief is that homelessness is a choice. People believe there is a set amount of circumstances that cause homelessness and that it is a choice not to fight to get out of those problems. The problems can range from mental health issues to drug addiction. Air pollution caused by wildfires may increase risk of dementia

  There are already more than 57 million dementia sufferers in the world, and by 2050, that figure is predicted to rise to 153 million. It is estimated that risk factors like exposure to air pollution account for up to 40% of these instances. Even when annual exposure was lower than the current EPA annual threshold of 12 micrograms per cubic meter of air (g/m3), the researchers discovered continuous evidence of a relationship between PM2.5 and dementia. The researchers discovered a 17% increase in risk for dementia for every 2 g/m3 increase in average yearly exposure to PM2.5, specifically among the studies using active case ascertainment. Despite the fact that the data was more sparse, they also discovered evidence supporting links between dementia and nitrogen oxide (5% increase in risk for every 10 g/m3 increase in yearly exposure) and nitrogen dioxide (2% increase in risk for every 10 g/m3 increase in annual exposure).
