Warming and Cooling Centers - Vital Resources Under Great Threat
Winter in a number of cities and regions brings in a number of hazards, hypothermia and frostbite being the most lethal and abundant in said season. During the summer, exposure to the elements also brings many dangers like extreme dehydration, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke. Warming centers are temporary and for daytime visits in which anyone can take refuge from the cold and harsh conditions of winter, whereas warming shelters are equipped for overnight stays. On the other hand, cooling centers serve virtually the same purpose but to alleviate discomfort and reduce danger during hot temperatures. These centers also often provide other services like free food and beverages for anyone who requires aid.
All forms of these protection centers are deeply needed in cities that are likely to experience drastic ranges in temperature on either side of the spectrum. The immense level of socioeconomic inequality, among a number of other reasons, leaves populations like the homeless, low income families, and outdoor workers at high risk of exposure. Therefore, these centers are vital to the survival of the most vulnerable populations in this country. Additionally, these centers reduce the strain on healthcare systems as temperatures and weather events continue to be less predictable. They are a massively useful resource for a large set of demographics.
Figure 1: In Santa Clara, the Central Park Library is one of many warming centers in the Bay Area. Many individuals seek warmth here during the winter months.
Despite the deep need for these shelters and other similar resources, there are a number of reasons they are struggling to stay open and function. From inadequate personnel, poor coordination, and lack of funding, these shelters and their organizers are fighting tooth and nail to aid as many individuals as possible. Thus, it is incredibly important that we advocate for these spaces and others alike. Calling lawmakers, fundraising money, and donating items like heaters, blankets, and clothing are just a few ways we can help these centers keep their doors open. The winter and summer months can be quite unforgiving. Think of the less fortunate and take action, these shelters are immensely important to maintain across the country.
