A Call to Volunteer for Project Homeless Connect: Washington County

Volunteer for Project Homeless Connect: Washington County

The issue of homelessness in the Portland Metropolitan Area has been increasing lately.  Project Homeless Connect: Washington county could really use your help as a volunteer to work for their organization either as a volunteer at one of their events or as a volunteer behind closed doors working with their organization.  There are many options, even if you wish to just be a one-time volunteer at one of their events, I believe it would be a very rewarding experience. Since 2006 “Project Homeless Connect: Washington County” has been providing homeless American citizens with access to critical resources (hot food and water), services, shelter and housing.  Highly powered by volunteers, Project Homeless Connect: Washington County’s goal is to provide a high quality fully integrated system of services and support for vulnerable people in need in the community. They partner with city leaders, and other organizations like The Salvation Army to run 24-hour shelters for homeless individuals  “The forces which affect homelessness are complex and often interactive in nature. Social forces such as addictions, family breakdown, and mental illness are compounded by structural forces such as lack of available low-cost housing, poor economic conditions, and insufficient mental health services” (www.phcwc.org).  Project Homeless Connect is highly powered by volunteers and you can sign up to volunteer at one of their events at https://www.phcwc.org/volunteer/     Listed below are all the volunteer opportunities that are available with Project Homeless Connect: Washington County.

Client Facing Opportunities: (Must be 18 or older)

  • Drop-In Volunteer: Help create a welcoming environment and build relationships with guests during our day center hours
  • Employment Volunteer: Support clients in their job searches and in developing their job skills.
  • Day Space Front Desk: When our office is open to the public, receptionist volunteers are there to greet clients, donors, and visitors in a friendly, professional manner.
  • Keep Us Organized: Volunteers are needed to help us keep our resource shed tidy and our pantry
  • Food Volunteer: During day center hours a meal is served for 40-60 people. We rely on generous volunteer support to provide these meals and to interact with the guest by serving the meal.

Behind the Scenes Opportunities: (Minors with prior permission only)

  • Resource Inventory and Organization
  • Administrative Support
  • Facility and Grounds Improvement: A few times throughout the year, we have groups come out to help us with projects around the office or drop-in center to paint walls, organize resources, perform yard work, and more.
  • Fundraising Support

The Project Homeless Connect: Washington County has a physical brick-and-mortar daycare center in the downtown Hillsboro district that is open every day from10:00 A.M - 4:00 P.M.  The physical mailing address and phone number will be located at the bottom of this post.  This physical location for Project Homeless Connect: Washington County offers homeless people a place to have access to charging stations, showers, laundry facilities and get served free breakfast and lunch daily.  If you are into doing volunteer work for the city and like community service work, I would highly recommend signing up to be a volunteer at one of Project Homeless Connect: Washington County's events.   I personally have experience and have volunteered for two of their events in the past.   I had the opportunity to work with Project Homeless Connect: Lane County as a volunteer in the past and have worked events at the Lane County Fairgrounds. At those events I remember it being a rewarding experience helping as a volunteer to provide hot food, water, sleeping bags, and access to dental and mental health services.
