Violence Towards the Homeless

I was downtown Portland at a museum celebrating Mother’s Day this year 2022. It was a Sunday at about noon, just in the daytime, and even though my own car had been parked in a parking garage since it was the smart thing to do so our car wouldn’t get broken into, just in case to be nice, my parents parked their car on the street near the museum. They found out soon after parking there after my dad had to return to his car to retrieve his glasses he needed, that someone had broken into their vehicle.

The people who had broken in had used a skateboard to break the driver side window. A street camera showed who it was and how they had broken it. Even though it was partly their fault for parking on the street and for leaving valuable items in their car especially that was visible, it just goes to show that it is not safe in downtown Portland to park on the street.

If they had a skateboard and had happened to have been caught and yelled at at that time if my dad had been there, they might have hit him, an older man with the skateboard. It was a young male and female who robbed their vehicle according to tue street camera. When I say young I am saying they were about 18 or 20 years old is how my dad said they looked. That is what I was told anyway since I did not see the camera footage, and I believe it was my dad who saw what happened on camera or was told by someone who got to look at the camera footage.

Some cars had parked almost touching alongside tents that were set up there in the street area or on the sidewalk. The people who broke into their car might not have been homeless but that brings up another reason why we need to try to help the homeless situation in Portland,  Oregon. This reason is that homeless people are also at risk for being victims of robbery as well as violence such as assault, and are not safe to be sleeping outside without a locked door and a solid walls.

Even if one has locked doors, such as a vehicle, it still might not be as safe as living in a closed walled actual home. It is unsafe for those who are homeless all around the USA. Here are some heartbreaking examples, including from Oregon of why homeless are susceptible to violence and are not safe living in tents. The homeless are also at risk for being victims of crimes.
