DIY Fundraising for a Nonprofit

What is DIY Fundraising?

Do-it-yourself (DIY) fundraising is one of the fastest-growing types of peer-to-peer fundraising that helps launch your mission and give supporters the opportunity to help in a way that’s highly personal and convenient to them. In peer-to-peer fundraising, supporters are encouraged to start a fundraiser for an organized event like a marathon or seasonal campaign. But the main difference between a DIY fundraising and peer-to-peer fundraising, is that you don’t have to rely on a single event to raise money. Instead, by creating a DIY fundraiser, the campaign will not be attached to a single event that is running at a specific time but simply raising money for our nonprofit as a whole and gives your supporters the ability to raise money the way they want to.

Why DIY Fundraise?

DIY fundraising works particularly well in nonprofit organizations because donors may see some kind of community or overall value in the mission of the nonprofit. An advantage of using DIY Fundraising, is using virtual events to allow people to raise money without time or geographical constraints. This allows for fundraising diversity that helps you pick up any slack in raising money. Such as having a year round DIY campaign, to help keep the organization running between large annual fundraising events that your organization’s growth and mission might become dependent on. This diversifies your funding sources and limits the risk of running out of money.

Another advantage for using DIY Fundraising is the ability to easily integrate one’s DIY Campaign to social media. Social media fundraising campaigns have been increasingly popular and very effective, one example is the use of Twitch, a live streaming platform, which has already been used to raise over $80 million for organizations around the world. Social media is also a great place to create your brand or just simply spread your message to the whole world!

How Do I Get Started?

DIY fundraising has to be a commitment that’s aligned within your entire nonprofit if you want to be successful. It is important to educate your board members on the benefits of DIY Fundraising to begin the ball rolling and start creating DIY fundraisers of their own. Next, training your employees to talk about DIY Fundraising when they are out and talking to donors so they can begin spreading the word by word of mouth. When starting a virtual fundraising campaign, it is crucial to ensure you have a functional website or go through visual fundraising tools such as GoFundMe. Within that website, you need a dedicated landing page with your mission, goals, call to actions, and anything you want to include to educate and gain supporters. To be successful, you might want to have attention grabbing headlines, compelling visuals, clear explanations of your work and mission, and perhaps also include testimonials and statistics to help boost your credibility so supporters can trust you. Now, it’s just picking what you would like to do to fundraise!
