Brand Implementation within Non-Profits

Nonprofit organizations strive to support and help alternative communities on a daily basis. Their drive to create a safe space for minorities or individuals struggling with problems comes from pride and want for change. One challenge these organizations face is the competitive nature of the community.

  • Competitive: How do nonprofits make themselves stand out? How do they utilize brand recognition to energize and mobilize their supporters?

The competition within the non-profit community is bigger than we think, and as larger organizations start to gain more recognition, smaller nonprofits are being lost in the mix. The competitive nature, regardless of the drive to help these communities, results in an unbalanced system which can create even more issues. With nonprofit organizations increasing each day, standing out amongst the crowd can be difficult without brand recognition. As a student studying graphic design, having brand awareness is the most important thing for any business, however, these smaller organizations tend to have less knowledge and income for such implementations.

Over the last few years, non-profit leaders have learned that having an iconic brand not only increases recognition but also improves internal identity and outreach. As these individuals have a larger focus on the change at hand, branding tends to fall at the bottom of the list. Some of the issues these leaders face with branding include falling into a “corporate” identity or even losing current or past followers due to a change of style.

Branding is important to keep in mind while starting or creating any brand or business. Humans are visual learners and without an iconic color scheme, logo, and stylizing of elements, the goals and intentions of the organization can be altered significantly or even forgotten. Creating a brand system from scratch can be the scary part, however not impossible. Thinking of how you want the world to see your organization, the feelings you want to portray, and the message you want to communicate. All of these elements can be accomplished with the use of a cohesive design system. This level of brand management can increase trust within the organization and allow individuals to feel a greater sense of impact and importance.
