Political reform can save vulnerable people and places

Often when we are talking about vulnerable people and places, it is on the topic of political campaigns and reform. We have seen many a politician on the campaign trail stand up and talk about the poor and how he/she can push through political reform to help these people and provide programs for them to get out of poverty. Yet there is little that has really moved the needle in addressing the stagnant wages as well as overall poverty in the U.S. and I believe this is largely due to partisan politics as well as corporate control of our government.

Often we get caught up in the media hype of this party is at fault and we play the blue and red blame game until our eyes bleed. I would argue that neither blue nor red party has the interests of the people at mind and our not looking to reduce overall poverty. This is largely due to the fact of special and corporate interests controlling our politicians as well as our country. If you look at the amount of campaign donations taken in by both the left and right parties can you really argue that politicians don't have the people’s best interests in mind (1). I encourage anybody to go and check out OpenSecrets.Org and see the amount of money that is being exchange to these politicians by special interests. If you look at the money that is exchanged and then the legislation that is passed, you will notice a direct correlation with how politicians vote on bills and how much money they accepted from a company that had a reason to profit from such legislation that is passed.

How is this not considered legalized corruption you ask? It is largely due to the fact that the only people that could change this law are the ones directly benefiting from it which is politicians. If you really want to see major change in poverty we as a society must rise up and vote neither for the man/woman with the blue or red tie. Instead we must vote in people that do not play partisan politics and rise above the status quo. This includes getting rid of corporate campaign donations, Closing offshore tax loopholes, Getting rid of irrelevant earmarks that are added to bills at the last second. Limit outrageous military spending as well as set up an agency to audit and keep governmental spending under control as well as keep people held accountable for irresponsible spending.

Unfortunately I think people often buy into the medias culture war that blames the other side while no real good legislation gets passed. The media does this to keep you distracted from the real problems that face our nation and instead politicians and corporations reap the profits while we the people are stuck to burden their ill-conceived corporate policy. I call on you the person reading this article, if you really care about vulnerable people and populations to vote not the same red or blue person that have been screwing you over for years. Instead ask for someone who runs on a platform of integrity and addresses the issues mentioned above. Red or blue will never be able to give you the real chance to actually help those that are in need. Demand integrity from your politician, think outside the corporate media box and you will change not just poverty but the world.
