Will AI Take Over the World?

    Artificial intelligence is a useful tool and fascinating development that has surged in recent years. While previously we feared computers reaching levels of near-human intelligence, AI has become an extremely valuable asset to businesses and individuals. Still, many people foresee a sudden robot takeover of the world following the emergence of AI. While AI likely won’t surpass human intelligence anytime soon, here are a few risks we should consider.

    AI replacing jobs is a significant concern among most workers today. AI can already be seen replacing certain professional responsibilities such as data entry, basic customer service, and even creative labor such as simple graphic design (think Canva AI). However, AI is certainly not at the level yet of replacing the jobs of healthcare professionals such as medical doctors and therapists, or creative jobs such as artistic direction. In fact, AI being used to replace therapy in some cases can lead to dangerous outcomes. 

    AI should certainly not be relied upon for all information. As a text interpreter, not necessarily a wealth of knowledge, AI can provide misinformation. You face the risk of encountering biased information every time you go to ask ChatGPT a question. Always fact-check the knowledge you receive from AI. 

    Finally, AI is far from sustainable. The data centers needed to support AI require large amounts of water and electricity, and this demand is only growing. While AI is commonly used and even essential to some jobs, we should all try to limit our use. 

    While we can all hopefully acknowledge that AI is not a sentient being, and probably won’t take over our world anytime soon, companies should control and limit the capabilities of AI while also controlling the environmental and social impacts. With the improvement of AI taking a more social and environmental focus, our society can become significantly improved. Will companies limit the amount of intelligence AI can gain?

For homeless individuals lack of physical identification can lead to loss of phycological identity and dignity. In the State of Oregon there are several programs created to help individuals experiencing homelessness to obtain essential iden tifi cation , such as state ID and Birth Certifi cates.   The Oregon Health Authority offers a program for homeless individuals to obtain a copy of their birth certificate free of any charges.
