The Sound of AI: Data Centers Causing Noise Pollution
In the current day and age, AI seems to have worked its way into many aspects of our lives. Whether it be utilizing AI in one’s job or asking ChatGPT a simple question, interacting with AI seems to be a very fast process.
Despite its apparent simplicity, the process behind how an AI retrieves information is more complex than one would expect. Much of the technology that goes into a functional AI resides in specialized data centers, which hold hundreds of computers, servers, and other kinds of equipment that are constantly running. This 24/7 function comes with several consequences, one of which being constant noise pollution. Fans and generators make loud, droning sounds that aren’t just heard but felt too in the form of vibrations.
Many people who live near data centers have raised complaints about the sound, saying that the constant humming can be perceived nearly a mile away from the data center itself. Reports show that the sound is very disruptive to nearby residential areas, often staying above safe levels of sound for the human ear to withstand for long periods of time. In server rooms, the noise level can reach up to 96 decibels. For reference, sounds above 85 decibels are considered harmful to human ears. Many nearby residents report headaches, nausea, sleep deprivation, ear problems and general anxiety as consequence of the noise pollution. Those who work in data centers are most at risk of health problems, since they must operate within and close to areas with the highest noise levels every day.
It is possible that local wildlife can also be affected by the noise. While research on the specific consequences of data centers must still be conducted, previous studies have shown that light and noise pollution from human influence can negatively affect animals by disrupting migration patterns, breeding cycles, and natural habitats.
So, what can be done to mitigate these noise problems? One solution would be to change the way AI data centers are cooled down. This would involve swapping out noisy fans for quieter, water-based cooling systems. However, this solution is comparatively expensive and requires massive amounts of water to work. Other solutions involve installing noise dampening materials throughout the building, or perhaps making the data center itself in a designated space far from residential areas. While AI companies mull over these decisions or ignore them altogether in favor of profit, those who live near data centers have no relief from the noise and feel that their complaints fall on deaf ears. Many are pushed to move out altogether and escape these conditions.
As AI continues to grow and expand, companies should prioritize finding safe ways to implement data centers such that they have minimal impact on both local human residences and natural wildlife. However, if they do not do this, they risk causing irreparable harm to their surroundings.
Next time you use AI in your daily life, think about where the information you’re getting is coming from. Think about both the people who live near the center and the ones who work in it, surrounded by a never-ending hum day and night. It is important to ask yourself if what you’re using AI for is even worthwhile. Will your query join the cacophony of noise pollution, or can you find another way to answer your question that doesn’t involve perpetuating the sound of AI?
