Whats behind every click?: Data Centers and How They Power the World

Every single time a message is sent, a video is watched, a Google search is done or even just submitting a simple school assignment online, we are all relying on something that a lot of people never see or have ever heard of: Data centers. These are huge facilities that are the backbone of the modern internet. They are responsible for storing and processing information that keeps a digital world going. According to the International Energy Agency, data centers are essential for networks and even increasing artificial intelligence that shape every everyday life.

Data centers are a facility that is filled with a lot of powerful computer systems. The servers store lots of data including social media content, emails etc.. Even when someone just opens an app or clicks a link these requests are all sent to a data center, they are processed and then returned. This happens billions of times every day all over the world. Without these data centers, the convenience of digital life would not be possible.

However, this growth comes with serious challenges, data centers use a massive amount of electricity because they are operating continuously. The servers run 24/7 and they generate large amounts of heat, which means that additional energy is needed in order to cool the systems. In fact, cooling these systems is one of the hardest parts of data center operations and as our digital use expands we are requiring lots of power and electricity demand and data centers are rising even further.

Because of this, energy has become a major focus in the industry. The IEA reports that companies are trying to work on reducing environmental impact by using more sustainable energy sources. Some data centers are even powered by renewable energy like wind, solar energy, and others are being designed in a climate that is a lot cooler in order to reduce the need for artificial cooling. Strategies like this are able to help reduce the impact of this on our environment and they become a little bit more sustainable.

Even though data centers are hidden, they actually play a critical role in everyday life from education, healthcare to entertainment, and communication. Understanding how they work also helps to see the hidden systems behind the technology that we are using in our everyday life. Now that our world is becoming a little bit more digital and data centers will only continue to grow, so will that environmental impact, that is why prioritizing efficiency and sustainability is more important than ever.
