The Things We Carry: Why Safe Storage Matters for People Living Outside
When you leave your home in the morning, you probably don’t think twice about the safety of your belongings. Important documents, clothing, medication, and personal items remain secure while you go to work, run errands, or attend appointments. For people experiencing homelessness, however, leaving their belongings unattended can mean losing everything.
When you don’t have stable housing, every single item you own has to be carried, guarded, or hidden. Imagine trying to get to a job interview, a medical appointment, or a shelter intake meeting while hauling everything you own on your back. For many people living outside in Portland, this is a daily reality and one of the most overlooked barriers to rebuilding stability.
Without secure storage, belongings are constantly at risk of theft, weather damage, or being discarded during city cleanups. Rain can ruin clothing, blankets, and sleeping gear. Theft can mean losing essential survival items. Even more devastating is the loss of critical documents like identification cards, birth certificates, or Social Security paperwork.
Losing identification can stop someone’s progress toward stability before it even begins. Many housing programs, employment opportunities, and assistance services require proof of identity. If those documents are stolen or destroyed by weather, a person may have to restart the long and difficult process of replacing them, something that can take weeks or even months without a permanent address. That’s why safe storage programs can make such a meaningful difference.
In Portland, the City Day Storage Program provides a secure place for people experiencing homelessness to store their belongings during the day. Located at 435 NW Glisan Street, the program allows individuals to drop off their items and retrieve them later the same day. Belongings are kept securely on site, helping people protect important possessions while they attend appointments, search for work, or access other services. The facility operates seven days a week from 7:00 a.m. to 7:45 p.m., and items can be stored overnight or for up to 30 days. Each person is given a storage container to ensure their belongings stay organized and protected.
Programs like this do more than safeguard personal items, they help people move forward. When individuals don’t have to carry everything, they own throughout the day, it becomes easier to travel to job interviews, medical appointments, or case management meetings. It also reduces the risk of belongings being abandoned or discarded, which helps reduce waste and keeps public spaces cleaner.
Safe storage may seem like a small service, but it addresses a major barrier faced by people living outside. Protecting someone’s belongings protects their progress, their safety, and their ability to access opportunities. Something as simple as a secure storage bin can help someone protect their identity, their health, and their future.
