Sock-it to homelessness.
Sock it to homelessness
Many of us see the homeless issue in our community, it really does not matter where you live, we see it all over. This week in Oregon we had some pretty cold and snowy weather and it really got me thinking about something I was told and a way that not only I could help but it is something so simple that almost everyone could help (we will get to that point in a minute). We all see the homeless issue no matter where we go, we see it on the corner, people asking for help, we see it on the sides on the streets, tarps, blankets, and shopping cart (filled with all a persons, belongings, and we see the homeless camps setup almost anywhere, but that is just the tip. I feel myself get overwhelmed when asked for help, I feel the what little give or help might not do much. I know a lot people feel the same way, I know people feel that maybe the help will be used in the wrong way (money given for food will be used for drugs), but we do not think about the reason, we don’t think that the effects of drugs will last longer that the effects of food, thus possibly making a day a little more tolerable. Maybe people don’t know where to start, maybe that don’t have time to volunteer, maybe they don’t have money to donate, maybe they just are unsure if they help will it actually make a difference. The answer is yes it will make a difference, even if it is little, and that brings me to a simple and fairly easy way to help. SOCKS, yep that simple just a pair of socks, a package of socks, any socks will help. The Cauf Society has a list on their website (https://caufsociety.com/why-the-homeless-need-socks/) of the 7 reasons homeless people need socks, and after you read it, it will make sense and hopefully you will go out and buy socks, but then what to do with the socks, well that is simple, take them to a homeless shelter near you. If you not sure where one is, here is a very good list by state (https://www.homelessshelterdirectory.org/) to help you find one near you. My hope is that after reading this, at least one person will go get some socks and help someone stay warm.
