Heat Waves Hits the Homeless even Harder.


๐Ÿ”†EXCESSIVE HEAT WARNING ๐Ÿ”†

 With temperatures rising to an estimated 100 degrees Fahrenheit this week, the homeless living on our city streets are at fatal risk. In 2021, according to statistics found on this website, over 71 people were confirmed or suspected to have died of heat related causes in Multnomah County, however the accurate number of deaths is likely higher. Those who have to live on the streets face excessive sun, lack of coverage or shelter, lack of water, and are subject to these temperatures for a prolonged period of time. 

If you or anyone you know is concerned about one's safety during this week's heat wave, here are cooling centers available to the public:

Overnight shelters opening at 2 pm on Tuesday and operating for 24-hours per day:

  • Charles Jordan Community Center 9009 N. Foss Ave.
  • East Portland Community Center: 740 S.E. 106th Ave.
  • Portland Building: 1120 S.W. 5th Ave.
  • Sunrise Center: 18901 E/ Burnside
Daytime Cooling center open Tuesday from 2-10pm and Wednesday 10am-10pm:
  • Old Town: 435 N.W. Glisan St.
