What is a nonprofit?
A nonprofit organization is an organization that does not aim to make a profit, but works to help people or to achieve an improvement in something. This means that any money the organization makes or donations they receive go back into helping the community in one way or another. In order to start a nonprofit you have to apply for a 501 (c) with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). A 501 (c) is the code for a nonprofit organization and there are twenty-nine different types of nonprofits that are recognized. These types of organizations include charitable organizations, labor organizations, business leagues, social clubs, veterans organizations, and employee benefit associations. These types of organizations can also potentially qualify for tax exempt status. Some of the most well known nonprofit organizations are the American Red Cross, UNICEF, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, National Public Radio (NPR), and the National Geographic Society.
Even if you’re not planning to start your own nonprofit there are many ways you can help out the over 1.5 million non profit organizations that already exist in the United States. You can donate money, supplies, or even your time by volunteering. COVID-19 has negatively affected a lot of these organizations and donating even a small amount can help them a lot. If you can’t give directly you can also help spread awareness by using things like social media to see if you people you know would be interested in helping out. If you’re not sure where to start, a quick google search can inform you of the nonprofits in your area and what you can do to help.
