Elder Abuse and Self Neglect: Making Sure Your Home Care is Effective
Self neglect and elder abuse in the elder communities is not something that comes on right away and is surprisingly prevalent in the single, divorced, or widowed elderly community in medium to low income areas. There are many early things to look for when visiting or helping out in the community such as excessive filth, strong odors, or hoarding unnecessary items such as papers and magazines.
After speaking with Paramedics and First Responders for Douglas County, it is surprising how often the older generation goes unnoticed and neglected. Families, care givers, and social workers often times are underperforming their activities and duties that are required of them for caring for the elderly. This underperformance leads to malnourished patients, untreated medical conditions, major repairs not being done on the home, and in some extreme cases animal or insect infestation.
It is important for there to be regular checks on those who are caring for people as there is a chance that they could be falling into complacency and not doing their jobs like they should be. Doing routine checks can involve asking the patients if they are satisfied with their care and visiting while the home staff is there and can lead to overall better patient care and well being
