A Little Love Goes a Long Way
We all need some basic human interaction and love from time to time. According to Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs a theory by psychologist Abraham Maslow, social belonging and love is the third most important human need out of five after physiological and safety needs. In this category of need Maslow stresses the importance of friendships, intimacy, and family. Without fulfilling the need for belonging the effects humans could be susceptible to social anxiety, loneliness, and clinical depression. In general it is a necessity that all humans need to feel like they have belonging among social groups before fulfilling the next two needs considered as esteem and self-actualization.
With age the elderly are at risk of not feeling loved or belonging. As time goes on family may drift from the elderly as they mature leaving them without little to no social interaction. Family is the most important source for belonging and we all need to be mindful to how much time we are spending with our elders. In terms of community involvement, there are ways to connect with the elderly through volunteer efforts at retirement homes and the programs that they host. Most homes have a wide variety of programs and activities offered to their residents but also reach out programs that involve the elderly in the community. These programs often need help putting on activities and with public outreach efforts. Reach out to your local retirement home the next time you are looking for volunteer options or if you want to make an impact on the community while making a few friends and brightening someone’s day.
