Meals on Wheel and Similar Organizations

To start off, we as a class have partnered with Meals On Wheels to help them. As a class and part of Portland State University, we are working to improve their training of new volunteers to make it easier for them to render their services. And this is with good reason as Meals On Wheels is one of the largest volunteer groups in the United States and according to Food and Nutrition, “More than 1.7 million people volunteer for Meals On Wheels.”

But they aren’t the only organization working to feed senior and otherwise homebound individuals. AARP the American Association of Retired Persons also offers meal programs along with its many other services, even “Have(ing) provided 22.9 million meals through donations and volunteer efforts since the program launched in 2011.” And this is just one of many similar programs. The World Food Programme which provides meals to regions where starvation is a significant threat. UNICEF which offers meals to youths around the world suffering from hunger. Share Our Strength which provides meals to low-income families, and Feeding America which provides the majority of food to the different services in America that deliver the meals to the different groups.

Meals On Wheels is a leading force in the fight to prevent hunger, but like any movement worth supporting they aren’t alone. If you have the rare occurrence of a Meals On Wheels not being close to your location, then there are many other ways offer support and help. Many organizations are working with the same goal of preventing hunger.
