The certain stereotype that Portland, Oregon has nowadays didn’t always used to be this bad. The city of Portland used to be beloved by all, and as of recent years, it has gained a certain reputation. It has become dirty, chaotic, filled with homeless people, and with everyone on drugs and illegal substances. No matter the truth of these statements. Portland is still a beautiful city to be around. It should be forgotten and avoided. Citizens of this city want to be safe in the streets they live in. That is why the issue of homelessness needs to be resolved and dealt with soon.
Establishing the problem of homelessness is hard to identify. It truly can be an assortment of issues that have made this situation so dire. Portlanders have been wondering what is to blame for all of the new homeless people crowding the streets. Is it the job market? The festering issue of drug use? Does Portland have better laws to deal with homeless people compared to other areas? The answer is yes for so many reasons. Portland has tried to help, but it never seems to stick. The City of Portland website states that from 2015-2022, the number of shelter beds grew from 800 to 2,000. This averages out to be 6,000 individuals using shelter beds in Portland every year. This number is only getting worse and worse. The numbers when they should be reduced. Based on that same article, the City of Portland spent 1.7B on affordable housing development for these new homeless populations in 2023. We are now spending billions of dollars in an attempt to deal with this issue. Does there seem to be a decrease in homelessness in Portland in 2026? It has only kept rising each year without stopping.
The homeless population isn't going anywhere, it seems like. Portland can keep pouring money into it the way they have. Maybe eventually it will decrease, and the tides will turn. The issue is when it doesn’t. When the numbers continue to grow, the issues get worse. The City of Portland has stated that the individuals on the streets are estimated to be 58 to 88% have suffered from substance use. These people need help, now more than ever, and simply giving them a bed to sleep in won’t do the trick.
Portland needs to get its brightness back. The welcoming atmosphere it used to have. An inviting city that people want to visit. It is not there, but that doesn’t mean it can’t get back there someday. People can’t give up on Portland yet, and the citizens need to stay strong.
