VICIOUS CIRCLE: Emotional and Psychological Effects of Homelessness

Significant psychological effects on homeless individuals can occur when faced with numerous challenges and stressors associated with their living conditions and the experience of homelessness itself. The constant uncertainty, lack of stability, and exposure to adverse conditions can contribute to developing or exacerbating depression and anxiety disorders. Homelessness can be a traumatic and stressful experience, exposing those individuals to dangerous situations that can lead to the development of PTSD. This mental health condition can cause flashbacks, nightmares, and anxiety attacks. Living on the streets or in unstable housing conditions can expose individuals to chronic stress, sleep deprivation, malnutrition, and inadequate healthcare. These factors can contribute to cognitive impairments, including attention, memory, decision-making, and problem-solving difficulties.

These effects on a person experiencing homelessness can inhibit their ability to find a solution for their living situation. It is essential to recognize the issue's complexity and work towards providing support and resources to address the psychological and emotional well-being of individuals experiencing homelessness. The daily struggles and challenges associated with homelessness can erode an individual's sense of hope for the future, and a blow to an individual's self-esteem and sense of self-worth, leading to feelings of shame, guilt, inadequacy, and a loss of identity.

The vicious cycle is insurmountable for many homeless individuals to overcome on their own. Access to mental health services, stable housing, and supportive interventions are crucial in addressing the psychological impact of homelessness and promoting well-being. Breaking the vicious circle of homelessness can only happen with the help of more fortunate individuals by recognizing and understanding these emotional and psychological effects, bringing awareness to others, and supporting outreach programs.
