For a community that is often overlooked and negatively stigmatized, Beauty 2 The Streetz works to fight for the houseless community. This organization provides services to the houseless community of Los Angeles’ Skid Row, an area that for years has been put on the map as grounds for the houseless community to live on. Founder Shirley Raines started her work on Skid Row by volunteering at churches and shelters where she witnessed first hand how the community was treated. Having seen the atrocities that many member of the community were subjected to, she took it upon herself to beautify the community of skid row. Recently named CNN’s 2021 Hero of the Year, Shirley uses her growing platform to bring services such as food, clothing, safety items, and hygiene to name a few because she believes that all people need to be able to see their own worth houseless or not. Through the additional help of her growing Instragram and Tiktok pages, she was was able to win CNNs Hero of the Year where she was awarded $100,000 for her cause. While this was a big win for her she used it to highlight how this is not a win for just her but the money means security for so many individuals navigating houselessness and financial insecurity.
With the help of the community, Beauty 2 The Streetz sets itself up on Skid Row every week providing services that so many of the individuals need. Giving the individuals the tools to better their lives or just survive the tough environment they already face. Haircuts, makeup, and wigs are also provided for the community in order to build up their own self worth. Her work continues to provide many people the ability to get off the streets. In an interview with CNN Shirley explains her impact on the community and her Hero of the Year win saying, “I don't do hero stuff, I do human stuff. I work out here in the streets to gain the trust of my community. The world had that opportunity to vote for 10 amazing organizations. And they chose one that dealt with homelessness ... to them that might say, 'Oh my god. People really are paying attention. People really do care.’”.
