How Can I get Involved in a Non-profit?

There are so many fantastic job opportunities within our communities today, and if you just so happen to want to seek out non-profit work, here are some tips about getting involved. It can be somewhat tricky figuring out how to break into a field that isn’t a part of corporate America. Do not fear, because it is easier than you think.

Tip One: Start Early

It is pretty easy to find volunteer work around one’s community and begin learning about the field early on. Volunteering is simply the best possible way to gain relevant experience and understand the type of organizations you want to work with. A great way to find places in your community to get involved in would include joining Facebook groups pertaining to your city or surrounding areas. These types of groups usually ask for volunteers or people willing to assist with events/fundraisers. Once you have volunteered for a few organizations, it will be the perfect experience for your resume!

Tip Two: Always Remember the Goal

It is essential never to lose sight of why we join Non-profit organizations or do volunteer work in the first place. Ensure you are always mission-driven, and remember to reorient yourself if you ever lose sight of why you wanted to become involved. Choosing to work in an area and having specific skills is not the most crucial thing in landing the job you want at a nonprofit. Though all those things are indeed a good start, it is also true that you must demonstrate to nonprofit employers that you align with their values and mission even more than you would a corporate interview.

Tip Three: Create a Tailored Resume

Aside from constantly updating your resume based on ever-changing life experiences, it is so important to tailor it specifically for each job you are applying for. In the nonprofit world, they definitely want to see some of your devotion to their mission displayed on your resume.  Do not forget to add Volunteering Experience, Continuing Education, Writing, and Interests sections. Never forget that the more you show you are part of the cause and have the skills they are seeking for the nonprofit job you are applying for, the more interviews you will land!
