Positive Community Impact: Local Resources for Seniors

Currently, many elderly people with different needs are living in our society, such as people with a low-income background, disabilities, mental health problems, and language barriers (i.e., non-English speakers), it is therefore important to have different types of communities/organizations that committed to assist them in various specific ways.

In Portland, there are numerous non-profit organizations aim to assist seniors through different aspects, these organizations usually provide resources on housing services, access to health care, free public health education courses for seniors, as well as English language training for those who are non-English speakers.

In fact, a large body of research indicates that health disparities exist among different groups of people (e.g., socioeconomic, racial/ethnic). Fortunately, there are many culturally specific community-based organizations are dedicated to help individuals, they provide specific resources and services for people with different needs (many with low-income/socioeconomic status), and they also become the bridge between their own cultures and different cultures, such as El Programa Hispano, African American Health Coalition, Asian Health & Service Center, and Urban League of Portland.

Indeed, having various services that aim for different elderly groups is beneficial to our community – not only for ensuring an economically stable life for them and eliminating health disparities but also for continuing to spread positive impact to the community.
