Pets for the Elderly
It is said that the most serious disease for older persons is not cancer or heart disease but it is loneliness. It can be understandable that we may not have time in our day to day life to visit our elders or volunteer time in care homes - and that is ok. The companionship that a pet can offer to humans could be insurmountable providing emotional support and unconditional love - and a perfect solution for elderly experiencing loneliness.
Not only do pets offer an unconditional bond for those in need but also the effects of having them around could improve overall health. The companionship of a pet can reduce blood pressure, decrease stress, ease pain, and even decrease chances of heart attack. According to the CDC, owning a pet can lower cholesterol. People who own pets have been proven to have lower cholesterol and triglyceride levels resulting in a lower risk of heart attack.
An organization called Pets for the Elderly makes it easy to provide the elderly with a cat or dog companion from participating shelters. Pets for the Elderly helps pay adoption fees, spay/neuter fees, and any pre adoption vet checks from participating shelters for elderly citizens (aged 60 and up) in the United States. Currently there are 46 participating shelters in 27 states and Pets for the Elderly has helped place 57,000 companion animals with senior adopters. Pets for the Elderly makes this possible through charitable donations and contributors. There are several success stories and reported accounts of improved health in seniors participating in this program. Importance for companion pets should be a necessity for the elderly as a solution for loneliness.
