Establishing Healthy Eating Habits

Good nutrition is important, especially for vulnerable people who may feel like they have less access to how they can receive healthy food options. The foods you ingest directly support your daily activities and are key to one’s health and livelihood. It is key to stay away from processed foods and concentrate most of your diet on fresh and natural ingredients. Healthy eating habits not only affect how you feel that day after eating, but have lasting impacts on your overall future.

Having a poor diet is associated with many illnesses. Eating unnatural foods in excess or having a very unbalanced diet could lead to heart disease, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, osteoporosis, and some cancers. Of course, weight gain is a common effect of unhealthy eating habits, but even those at a normal weight may be at risk to these long term health effects if a healthy diet is not maintained.

The building blocks of energy are proteins, fats, and carbohydrates. Once eaten, carbs are digested and break down into glucose. This creates energy which your body either immediately uses or stores for later. It is key to get your carb intake from complex carbohydrates. Some examples of complex carbohydrates are black beans, whole grain bread, squash, peas, and many more. These carbs provide you both a sufficient amount of calories as well as nutrients. On the other hand, it is important to limit your intake of simple carbohydrates. Simple carbs are contained in foods like sugar and white flour. These carbs are high in calories but have little nutritional value, therefore they are an unwise choice in terms of producing energy.

Overall, your mind and body will feel much more alive and sufficient on a well balanced diet. Having a healthy diet doesn’t mean one must completely cut out all unhealthy foods, but strictly limit them. Having a treat once in a while won’t hinder your process, but it is important to be aware of the potential health impacts of ingesting large quantities of low-nutrient foods. Healthy eating should be accessible to all people.
