The importance of proper nutrition in the eldery

As we age a few factors contribute to dietary changes that must be kept in mind in hope that we can maintain a healthy diet. With age comes loss of appetite, loss of energy and even weakening of taste buds. These changes can contribute to poor choices in food because something does not taste as good as it used to, or you simple do not have the same energy to go and cook a healthy meal! It is however important to maintain a healthy balanced diet as you age and here is why:

-Unhealthy foods high in saturated fats can contribute to diseases people are more prone to getting as they age, such as colon, pancreatic and prostate cancers.

-Cardiovascular health can be drastically improved with a healthy diet low in salts and fats to avoid the buildup of too much cholesterol. While this disease type is often genetic, it is possible to improve the condition and maintain a healthier heart simply by making more appropriate eating choices.

-As people age, they need more vitamins. This can be tricky as some deal with a decreasing appetite, that is why it is important to use the food intake wisely and full of nutrients. Some of these nutrients include:
 1. Calcium- this is important to maintain bone health and it can be found in cereals, leafy vegetables and fruit juices.
2. Vitamin B12- you can find this vitamin in lean meats and seafood
3. Fiber- this is important to fight constipation and it also lowers your risk of heart disease. Foods full of fiber include fruits, vegetables, and whole grain breads.
4.Potassium- this can help high blood pressure and some foods with rich potassium are vegetables, fruits and yogurt.

Along with a healthy, balanced diet, it is important to stay hydrated and follow the “8 glasses a day” general rule. Also, do not forget about exercise! Staying active can lead to a better cardiovascular health and a more independent lifestyle!
I hope this tiny guide somewhat helped to keep in mind that the food we consume has a say in our general health so we can make smart choices!
